Why is Vitamin B essential?

With the number of various vitamins on the market and all of them playing a part in improving our health… it can be hard to decide which ones to focus on without breaking the bank.  

B vitamins have a direct impact on an individual’s energy levels, the functioning of the brain and their cell metabolism. So essentially, vitamin B contributes to your overall health.  

Vitamin B can be consumed through a wide variety of foods but there are many factors that will increase the demand for vitamin B - such as pregnancy, medical conditions, genetics, alcohol, etc. In these instances, one would need to take a vitamin B supplement.  

Some signs that show that you are lacking Vitamin B can include: 

  • Tiredness 
  • Depression  
  • Difficulty concentrating or memory loss 
  • Feeling of dizziness when walking 
  • Numbness in the hands, legs, or feet 
  • Constipation 
  • Loss of appetite 

There are 8 different types of vitamin B. If you take a B-complex vitamin then it usually includes all 8. The 8 B vitamins are: 

  • B1 (thiamine) – helps the metabolism by converting nutrients into energy 
  • B2 (riboflavin) – helps convert food u=into energy and acts as an antioxidant 
  • B3 (niacin) – helps the metabolism and DNA production + repair 
  • B5 (pantothenic acid) – helps regulate hormone levels and helps get energy from food 
  • B6 (pyridoxine) – helps red blood cell production 
  • B7 (biotin) – helps regulate gene expression and essential for metabolism 
  • B9 (folate) – helps cell growth, the formation or red and white blood cells and proper cell division 
  • B12 (cobalamin) – helps neurological function, DNA production and the development of red blood cells. B12 is the most well known of all the B vitamins. 

Increasing your vitamin B intake may improve your mood and cognitive function.
